Back to Writing? I Really, Really, Hope So!!

Ocean City, NJ, is my little slice
of beach heaven
We took a week's vacation down the shore this summer (that's Pennsylvania talk for being at the beach). While we were there, I did a lot of writing - journaling, writing down prayers, just jotting down random thoughts. About 4 days in - I'm really slow to catch on to things - I realized that I had been doing a ton of writing, and that I was really enjoying it! I used to write all the time! I mean, you are here - on my blog - where I used to write every week. My brain injury, among other things, got in the way of that writing for a long time. I missed it! I tried vlogging for a while, but let’s be honest - I wasn't very good at it.

There were two major problems with the vlogging situation:
  1. Consistency was an issue - making videos is just more difficult, technically speaking, than writing a few paragraphs. The house has to be empty- otherwise, you can hear my kids yelling at video games in the background. I can't be in my pjs - that look totally undercuts any message I'm trying to send :-) Uploading requires real internet connections and not just my phone in the Target parking lot. See! Issues. So I had a really hard time being a consistent vlogger. I just couldn't put out videos on a regular basis.
  2. Content was also an issue - I was trying too hard to avoid the elephant in the room. I didn't want to be "that girl". You know - that girl who writes/vlogs/whatever about her chronic condition. I so badly want to be more than my brain injury that I was avoiding talking about it. But it is a very real part of my life, so avoiding it was stupid and led to vlogging that was less than authentic.
So let's try a fresh start -

My ER pic from 2015
Smiling cuz I have no idea
how much our lives were
about to change
My name is Dawn, and I have a traumatic brain injury with chronic migraines. It affects every aspect of my life and the lives of my family. I was injured in March, 2015, and the last 3.5 years have been full of life, lessons, laughter, limitations (whoa! check out that alliteration!), challenges, blessings, and the full gamut of emotions as I have learned how to cope with a new - and ever-changing “normal”.

In case you haven’t made it to my “about me” page (or in case it’s not up to date, which is possible), I’m happily married to Drew - we just celebrated our 20th anniversary in December. We have three sons - two in high school and one in middle school. Our home is loud, usually happy, smells like sweaty boy, chaotic with sports, band and work schedules, and someone is always eating. I love it! But my injury has changed our family. We all had to learn how to adapt to a new “normal”. This isn’t just MY chronic condition. It’s OUR chronic condition.

Oh how I wish my injury story was glamorous! Or noble! Or heroic! But it’s not. It’s so lame. I slipped on wet tile and fell down on my face. I went straight down like a tree. I landed on my chin and rattled my brain. I’m told I made an epic sound when I went splat. I don’t remember that part, but it’s nice to know I made an impression. Brains don’t like to be rattled. A concussion that was supposed to heal in under 6 weeks led to outpatient physical therapy after 6 months and then to daily migraines and confusion after a year. Now, 3.5 years in, I never know which version of me is going to wake up: the semi-capable adult who can make it through a day with some head pain but who can fake “normal” and parent well, the pain-riddled migraine sufferer who is in agony and has to stay in bed and can’t cope, or the dazed and confused fruitcake who looks competent on the outside but gets lost on the way to the grocery store. Once we know how a day is going to go, the whole family can adjust and adapt as needed. We’ve gotten pretty good at it. It’s just tricky not knowing.

But I’m so much more than my brain injury! I’m a woman with hopes and dreams and a huge love of life! I think that’s why I held off writing about it for so long. I don’t want my injury to define me. I don’t want to be “the girl with brain damage”. I’m fun! I love to laugh and make other people laugh. I enjoy baking and travel and talking to people! I love a party! I just have to work the things I enjoy into the limitations of my life. This is my reality.

So where does writing fit in to this? What am I rambling on about? I’m telling you, my very patient friends, that I’m going to come back to blogging. Well, I’m going to try. I always have something to say :-) It may be about parenting, marriage, what God is teaching me from His word, or even (heavy sigh) my brain injury and what it’s like to deal with a chronic condition. I can’t promise consistency. But that is my goal. I can’t promise anything wise or deep. There are many other bloggers doing wise and deep out there. But I can promise authenticity. And laughter. Life is too short to take anything too seriously. Even a brain injury.

Back to Blogging - After A Long Time

"God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called." - Anonymous

It’s been almost a year since my last post. I started blogging with so much excitement. I had lots to share! I was going to make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. Then I crashed and burned.

What went wrong? It was a combination of things.

First, I got distracted. I got hooked on page views, re-tweets, and comments. Being a "big blog" became too important. I was losing my focus on content. I was losing myself and my priorities in a quest to grow my blog.

Second, I was getting a little too puffed up. I thought I had real wisdom to share that would improve the lives of women everywhere. I was totally missing all of my own issues that needed work.

Finally, events last November had me stepping away out of necessity to focus on my life and family. During this time, my own baggage and issues demanded to be dealt with. Facing my own weaknesses and figuring out what to do with them is not a fun ride. Doubts set in. “What in the world did I think I had to share?” “As messed up as I am, did I really have the nerve to think I could blog something useful for other women?” “Do I really have anything say?”

I honestly don’t know the answers to these questions even now. But the desire to blog – to share my heart with all its issues - won’t leave me alone.

So here I sit, working on a blog post – feeling inadequate and ill-equipped, but willing.

Flawed but still valuable?
The Bible is full of examples of God using messed up people to do great things. The story of Gideon is one of my personal favorites. Gideon was the least of his family, which was the least of his clan, which was the least of his tribe. He was afraid of the bad guys and was hiding from them in a winepress. And still God came to him! He was so unsure that God could use him that he demanded a sign – twice! But God did use Gideon in a mighty way. Gideon was weak, afraid, and full of doubt. But he became a leader that God used to defeat a huge army in a miraculous way.  Gideon’s story is in the Bible – the book of Judges, chapters 6-8.

If God can use Gideon, it's possible that He can use me. He doesn’t expect me to be perfect – He knows me well enough to know that’s not possible. He just wants me to be willing. And since I’m not perfect, anything positive that comes out of my writing can only be attributed to God. There can’t be any confusion about who deserves the credit

Thank you for your patience with me as I worked out some issues. Thank you for encouraging me, through messages and emails, to get back to blogging. Please pray that I will say what God wants me to say.

This Is What I Was Born To Do!

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
 - Confucius

I'm back! And I missed you. I can't believe how long it's been since I posted last! Life really can get in the way of blogging sometimes.

Today, I'm dying to tell you about the event we were a part of this weekend. I found myself doing exactly what I was born and designed to do. And that is an amazing feeling!

Find a kids sports leagueDH and I lead a basketball and cheerleading league through Upward Sports. We are entering our 7th year of Upward Basketball and Cheerleading, and I absolutely love it!! We run about 450 basketball players and cheerleaders. I'm completely involved alongside DH (the director of the whole program), and our boys are involved too. I can't imagine life without Upward in it.

This past weekend, we held our Upward Player Evaluations. That means that the players and cheerleaders come to the gym to try on uniforms and run drills (basketball players). We use the information from Evals to order uniforms and make even teams.

At Evals, it's my job to be the greeter and "traffic cop" of sorts. I'm the first face that our Upward families see when they come in the door. I stood in one spot for four hours and greeted over 300 players/cheerleaders and their families. Some were brand new to our program, and others have been playing/cheering with us for years. I answered questions about the program, sent them to the correct spot in the building for drills and uniforms, and basically tried to make them feel welcome.

I loved every minute of it!! I saw people I have come to care about, pitched a program I firmly believe in, handled administrative details, and loved on little children.

Here's why my role this weekend was such a great fit for me -
  • Greet people as they came in - God has given me a knack for names. I just remember them. So when the folks came in, I was able to greet many of them by name. I was able to ask about their families and their friends. I could tell them that their best friend just came through and was in the gym or that I had just seen their coach from last year, and he was going to coach again. Remembering details about their lives made our people feel at home and welcomed. I can't take any credit for it. God made me this way. But I absolutely loved being able to use that gift to make people feel cared about.
  • Answer questions about the Upward program - some of the folks who came in Saturday were brand new to Upward. They had heard about us and wanted to give it a shot, but most had questions or concerns that needed to be addressed. Because God has given me a bubbly personality (to put it lightly - I tend to gush about the things I love), I was able to handle any questions with complete confidence in the program. I could look into the eyes of a little five-year old and put them at ease about trying something new. I could tell a dad that his new cheerleader wouldn't be learning anything inappropriate. I could promise a nervous basketball parent that their child's coach would be kind and would teach their new ball player everything they need to know.
  • Handle administrative details - because God has given me an eye for detail, I've been able to help DH as an unofficial assistant director of Upward. I'm able to help with the details of teams and coaches and dates and cost. And then when the questions come from the parents, I'm able to answer them.
Where in the world am I going with this?

No, this is not a commercial for Upward Sports. They haven't asked me to promote them, and there is nothing in it for me. I do believe that Upward Sports is an amazing program. I would highly recommend that if you aren't involved in Upward (as a volunteer or as a parent of a player/cheerleader), you look for a league in your area. If you've never heard of Upward Sports before, look them up. It's a wonderful program! Click on the image to learn more about Upward Sports.

Here on my blog, I've done a lot of self-analysis over the last few months. I've looked at my strengths and my weaknesses. I'm learning that when I know how I was designed, and when I put my gifts and abilities to use helping others, I'm at my most fulfilled in life. I'm working alongside my family, using my talents, and serving my community. And it's wonderful!

What about you? Have you found a way to put your strengths and abilities to work in a way that brings you joy? I'd love to hear about it. If you haven't found your "thing" yet, don't quit looking! Try something new. If that doesn't work, try something else. Keep trying until you find that "thing" that sparks you - that thing that lets you be the person you were made to be.

Lessons I'm Learning As A Blogger

"Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood."
 - Helen Keller

With all the personal analysis that's been going on here on my blog, I'm learning a lot about myself. I hope you are too (learning about you - learning about me might give you a good laugh, but it probably won't help in your daily life). If you missed any of the posts on Being The Best Version of You, here they are.

  1. Struggling to Figure Out Who I Am
  2. I'm Tooting My Own Horn, and I'm Proud Of It!
  3. Putting It All Out There Today - Please Be Kind
  4. Using the Pieces to See The Whole Picture
Today is going in a similar direction with me revealing too much about myself in an attempt to encourage you. I want to share a little bit of what I've been learning as a blogger.

The image from my first post
I started this blog on May 27, 2012. Here's my very first post, in case you missed it. I started blogging because I was convinced that I could be an encouragement to women out there. I was going to help them realize that they are special and have something to offer. I was going to inspire them to be the women that God made them to be. Then they would be the mother/wife/woman they were designed to be. I had big plans.

Here's where it gets good. In all the self-analysis posts I've done recently, I'm the one who has learned, grown, and been encouraged. I'm the one who is learning how to be the woman God made me to be. I set out to help others grow (that sounds so vain!), and instead, I'm growing. And I didn't even know I needed to grow and change (I told you I can be full of myself)!
This is me - being vain

When I realized that this blogging stuff was working to change me (and when I got comments that it was encouraging others), I put my whole heart into it. I started making it a major priority. Guess what happened - my calendar magically filled up. I totally ran out of time to play blogger. I had to put it aside to focus on real life. So I adjusted my priorities and put blogging back where it belonged - until the next time.

It seems to be a vicious cycle with me. I get excited about the blog world, elevate it above the truly important things in my life (marriage, parenting, etc), and then something happens to keep me from blogging for a time. I see the wake-up call for what it is and put things back in order. One of these days I'm hoping that I'll just keep blogging where it belongs and spare myself the lesson. But until I wise up, you can use any weird silence on my blog as a message that I got my priorities out of line again.

Where I am going with all this? I'm hoping that if I tell you about the lessons I'm learning, I'll save you some time and energy.

Here's the sum up.

  • Attempting to help others is a good thing. But I need to be ready to see myself honestly and grow and change along the way.
  • A good thing, in the wrong place on the priority list, can become a bad thing. {<-Tweet This} And if I don't keep it in the right perspective, God steps in and does it for me.

What about you? What experience has brought you growth and change when you least expected it? Is there anything you tend to mis-prioritize without realizing it? Don't leave me out on this limb all alone :-)

    I've Been Thinking About Priorities.

The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.
     - Stephen Covey

    I'm back!

I took a blogging break for a while. You can read about that decision here. It wasn't a fun call to make, but it was the right one. My life needed me to be fully present for a bit.

While I was away from my blog, I had time to think through some questions that had been bugging me.

Where does blogging fit into my life? How do I get everything on my to-do list done? How do I carve out time for me and the things that matter to me?

I went around in circles and kept coming back to the idea of a filter - not for my words; that's a whole different post - for my life. If I make a filter of my priorities and pass everything through it, decisions could be easier and life might be simpler.

    So what are my priorities?

    1) God - I want to get to know Him better and keep learning more about who He created me to be

    2) Family - my husband and three boys matter to me. I desperately want to be the best wife and mother that I can be.

    3) Others - I want to be an encouragement to other women. Whether they are in my real life or my friends in cyber space, I want to be someone who inspires those around me to embrace who they are and live life to the fullest.

Ok. Now I have my priorities clearly stated. What do I do with them?

Now I use them as a test for every option that crosses my path.
    • Lunch duty at my kids' school? Passes through the filter. So I sign up.
    • Helping a friend finish a major project with a looming deadline? That passes the test. I say yes.
    • Helping to plan an event that I'm not interested in that doesn't reach out to women? Does not pass the test! I say no.
[A side note here - there is nothing wrong with saying no. Sometimes we have to say no to those who want us to do something. It's ok. Don't feel guilty. Know what your priorities are. Know how much you and your family can handle. Then give the request a fair shake. If it doesn't pass the priorities filter, or if it would just be too much on your family, say no. And don't let anyone give you grief about it. Side note over.]
    • Joining the gym now that all my boys are in full day school? It will keep me healthy and sane and help me be the wife and mother I want to be. Passes the test. I say yes.

I had to take my blogging break because my family needed me. My family comes before others, and my blog is for me and others. My filter of priorities made it an easy call.

That doesn't mean I didn't miss you! I missed our interactions here, on Twitter, and on Facebook. I missed hearing your thoughts on what I have to say. I'm so happy to be back!

What are your priorities? They don't have to be the same as mine. Does everything in your life pass the filter right now? I love hearing what you have to say!

    Big Decision For Me

    Hello my wonderful readers,

I don't know if you realized that Friday's post didn't go out, but it really frustrated me not to be able to write and connect with you. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and then getting yours in response. I really enjoy the give and take that exists in our blogging community.

But there is so much going on in my life right now, that I'm really struggling to find the time to sit down and write my posts.

    Here's what's going on right now -

    • My babies (don't tell them I call them that) go back to school in three weeks. Getting them ready to go back and spending the last days of summer well are taking up a huge amount of time and energy.

    • Our house is being remodeled. We started a major addition - a long story which I promise to tell you some day - in the middle of July. The constant decision making and lack of sleep (the framers start before 7am every day) is taking its toll on my brain and energy.

    • Then there is the rest of life - cooking, cleaning, etc. As much as I would love to set those chores aside to spend time with you, a girl has to have clean clothes and food to eat.

So what does that mean for Come Over For Coffee? Nothing major. I still want to spend time talking to you over coffee. I still want to have girl time and good conversation with you at my kitchen table. But I can't have any coffee dates right now. I need to clear my calendar for a few weeks.

Let me get the kids settled into school. They are all three in full day school this year for the first time!! Then I'll have time for our chats over coffee. Having you over will be a top priority after school starts.

Thank you so much for your understanding. I really appreciate your friendship and the richness you bring to my life!

Let's make a date for Monday, September 10. I'll be back at the table with my coffee in hand. Will you join me?

In the mean time, contact me through Facebook, Twitter, or email. Let me know what topics we should talk about when we get together again. Let me know what's new with you. I'll be online some over the next few weeks.

Until our next cup of coffee . . .

Happy Two Month Blogiversary to Us!!

Do you know what today is? It's the two month blogiversary of Come Over For Coffee!!

    Happy Two Month Blogiversary!

I've been blogging for two whole months!! And you have been reading and commenting for two whole months!!

    Hooray for us!!

Thank you so much for reading. Without you, my blogging would be pointless. It blows my mind every time someone says they read my posts. When you tell me that something I wrote impacted you, I am so touched! When you leave me a comment sharing your thoughts, I am honored!

So thank you!! And congratulations on our milestone!

    Here's to you!

Have a killer cup of coffee today to celebrate!

Warning - Not My Usual Post!

"A fine bunch of water lilies you turned out to be. I'd like to see anybody make me wash, if I didn't wanna."
     - Grumpy

Today is Wednesday. Usually on Wednesday, I post about something light and fluffy - something that makes me smile in an attempt to make you smile too.

Today, I don't wanna (insert childish whine here, complete with pout).

I'm just grumpy. No reason - life is really good here!

And today I don't like people - I could tell you all about it, but that would go against my post about guarding my tongue :-) I'm just generally annoyed with folks today - news folks, Facebook folks, most folks.

Not you, of course!!! I'm not annoyed with you at all! It's everyone else that's on my nerves.

So I don't want to blog about something light and fluffy (to my brother-in-law who was looking forward to today's post, check back next week). I'm too grumpy.

Maybe I need more girl time. I did see a friend last week, and we had a great time, but maybe I'm in a foul mood because I need more friend time. I'm going to go back and read my post about Girs' Night Out and see if it helps my mood.

Maybe I'm just having a pity party. Want to come? You are invited, but presents are required :-)

This too shall pass, but in the mean time, I'm going to go fix a second cup of coffee and curl up with a book.

One of the Main Reasons Why I Blog

"Where there is no vision, the people perish . . ."
     - Proverbs 29:18a (KJV)

I've been giving a lot of thought lately to why I'm blogging. Why did I start it (other than to give DH's ears a rest)? What is the message I'm hoping to communicate? Who do I want to communicate it to?

I'm starting to figure it out. I could be cryptic and let you put the pieces together as the blog continues, but it seemed to make more sense for me to just be up front with it.

One of the main things I'm passionate about is wanting every woman to know that she is someone special. God made each one of us the way we are for a reason. My desire is for every woman to figure out who she is and be proud of being that person.

My goal would be for women everywhere to know that they are unique and be thankful for that.

You are not like me (no audible cheers here please). I am not like you. Being different from each other doesn't make one of us less than the other. We're just different.

It's so hard to be a woman some days. I don't know about you, but I find myself comparing myself to other women. "She's so much skinnier than I am." "She's a LOT sweeter than me." "I wish I could be as good at housekeeping as she is." So maybe not that last one, but you get the idea.

In comparing ourselves to others, we fail to appreciate the person we were made to be. It's an easy trap to fall in to.

My hope is to help women see that they are good enough, just as they are. We all should aim to be the best us that we can be. But aiming to be like others will just wear us out.

Don't ask me how I intend to convey this message to the women of the world. I don't even know how I'm going to convey this message to those who read my blog (by the way, THANK YOU for reading!! I'm still stunned that people are reading what I have to say!!!!).

I just know that this message is one of the major reasons why I blog. And I wanted you to know.

    Blogging and Summer Don't Mix

"The right thing, at the wrong time, is the wrong thing."
     - My Dad

I love blogging. I really do enjoy it! I pretend I'm at my patio table with a cup of coffee and you - my new friends. I pretend that we are chatting about whatever comes to mind and enjoying time together.

But blogging takes time. Getting my thoughts in a straight line in a way that makes sense isn't always easy. So it takes me a little bit to sit down with the topic and try to put my thoughts together well.

Lately, I'm short on time. It's summer, so all my boys are home. Because of how we do summer here (my thoughts on summer with kids), I am constantly surrounded by my men - not a bad way to live :-) But this pattern severely limits my time to sit and type up witty blogs.

I want to blog. Blogging takes time.

I want to be a very involved mom. That takes lots of time.

I only have so much time.

My kids are more of a priority than blogging.

    So blogging is suffering. Ugh.

Don't worry. My brain is full of fun blogging ideas (I get my best ideas in the shower). I'm not going to quit blogging. I fully intend grow this blog into bloggy awesomeness. But the awesomeness may not come until September. Stay tuned!

A Question (or 38) For You

We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.
     - Lloyd Alexander

Can I ask you a question? Or thirty-eight?

Do you ever wonder about a subject, unable to find any clear answers?

Can I share a topic I've been pondering lately? All in the form of questions since I don't have any answers?

Where is the line between maintaining a sense of privacy and letting others into your life enough to be able to connect?

How much online sharing (Facebook, Twitter, Blogging) is too much?

Is there a danger in sharing too much? Do the details of my life really need to be out there for all to see? If I share those details with the world, does that make the events less special for me? For those involved in the event in real life? Am I cheapening my life by sharing everything with everyone?

Is it possible to put my children at risk by oversharing about them? When they finally venture into the cyber world, will they be happy that their faces are already all over the internet? Will they appreciate pictures of them in a diaper or some other situation that might be an embarrassment when they try to create their own cyber presence? Will the pictures/tweets/status updates that are cute now be cute to them someday? Do I realize that what I post cannot be unposted? What about the "friends" that see these pics, etc? Am I really sure that they are the same person I knew way back when? Can I be certain that there is not a predator on my list of "friends" or "followers"? Is any of this really worth putting that picture of my cutie out there for all to see? What is gained by posting? What is lost by not posting? What is preserved by keeping it private?

What about my family as a whole? If I want what happens in our home to be special, do I cheapen it by sharing it with the whole world? How much is too much? At what point are there more than just us in the house because I've invited my whole world of cyber "friends" to come for dinner?

But without sharing, can there be real connections? Don't all great speakers/writers expose a slice of themselves to connect with their audience? Can I connect with my audience without sharing? If so, how? If not - if sharing is required - how much is necessary? If I want to be real and genuine and also maintain a boundary of public/private, where is the line?

Have you ever given any of this any thought? Or do you just post whatever comes to mind with no thought to the consequences?

Can you tell that I have been giving this a lot of thought? If you have thought about it, would you please share with me?

    How To Explain My Name

"If names are not correct, language will not be in accordance with the truth of things."
     - Confucius

DH keeps telling me that I need to explain the name of my blog, "Come Over For Coffee: We'll Talk". So here's the explanation -

I love my house. It's cute and cozy - the furnishings are nice, but not too nice; we have picnics in the living room and do projects on the dining room table. But my house is more than just a home.

DH and I decided, when we bought it, that we wanted our house to have a mission. We wanted it to be a "soft place to land" for everyone who walks through the doors. That sounds great in theory. But putting it into practice was a different matter altogether. What would it look like to offer someone a "soft place to land" in our home?

Then one day I invited a friend over for coffee. Her kids played with my kids. She and I sat at the kitchen table and talked over coffee and cookies. We didn't talk about anything major - just what was going on in our lives.  The next day she texted me and said that she really enjoyed being at my house. She said she felt completely comfortable to be herself knowing I wouldn't judge her. That was it!! That is what DH and I had been after.

Since that day, many women have been at my kitchen table, patio table, or living room couch. Over coffee, we have discussed a wide range of topics: from skinny jeans to real marital issues. God has done some real work in my life and in the lives of those who come over for coffee. I have learned so much from the women who have entrusted their coffee-time to me!

That is the long version of how my blog got its name. I don't have all the answers to life's problems, but anything I've learned along the way is yours for the asking. I have a Keurig and a huge assortment of K-cups. I have a cozy kitchen table and a listening ear.

So come over for coffee! We'll talk.

Look, Mom! I started a blog!

All adventures, especially into new territory, are scary.

I’ve decided to start a blog. Maybe it’s because I can’t get anyone to listen to me soapbox (yes, I'm using soapbox as a verb. I soapbox often). Maybe it’s as a gift to my husband – if I tell you what's on my mind, he won’t have to listen to me. Maybe I just want to hear myself talk. Or maybe I have something to say. We’ll see :-)

Honestly, it's a little bit scary to think about putting my thoughts out into cyber space. What if no one reads it? What if the whole world disagrees with me? What if I start great out of the gate and then just quit because I get tired of it? I really don't want to fail.

I digress. Back to the point -

If you are new to my blog – and since this is the first post, everyone is new to my blog :-) then maybe you want to know what it is I might blog about. I’m going to blog about the things I’m passionate about

    • Parenting
    • Marriage
    • Being an individual
    • Priorities
    • Faith
    • Being genuine
    • Grace

That’s not at all an exhaustive list, but those are the main ideas. No, I don’t pretend to be an expert on any of those topics. That would just be crazy talk. But I do know a thing or two about each one. You can let me know if anything I share is worth reading.
